Allergies affect millions of people, but symptoms can vary widely from one individual to another depending on the specific triggers and how the immune system responds.

What Is Allergy Testing?

Allergy testing is a diagnostic process used to determine whether the immune system reacts to substances called allergens. Identifying your specific triggers is an important first step in developing a personalized care plan to explore strategies for symptom management.

Common allergens we test for include:

  • Pollen
  • Dust mites
  • Mold spores
  • Pet dander

Types of Allergy Testing at St. Louis Sinus Center

We offer a range of safe, clinically recognized allergy testing methods. Your provider will determine the most appropriate approach based on your symptoms, medical history, and overall health.

SKIN PRICK TEST

This is the most commonly used method to detect immediate allergic reactions.

● Small amounts of allergens are applied to the skin in a controlled clinical setting.

● The skin is gently pricked to introduce each allergen.

● After 15 to 20 minutes, your provider checks for signs of a reaction, such as redness or swelling.

INTRADERMAL TEST

Used when further confirmation is needed after skin prick testing.

● A small amount of allergen is injected just beneath the skin.

● The provider closely monitors for a reaction.

⚠️ This method may help detect subtle responses but carries a higher risk of false positives. Results should be interpreted in the context of a full clinical evaluation.

BLOOD TEST (IgE Antibody Testing)

Appropriate when skin testing is not viable due to certain medications or skin conditions.

● A blood sample is analyzed for allergen-specific IgE antibodies.

● This method offers a broader overview of immune system reactivity.

⚠️ Blood test results should always be interpreted alongside your symptoms and clinical history.

Preparing for an Allergy Test

Before your test, your provider will give you specific instructions. These may include:

  • Notifying your provider of any existing medical conditions
  • Temporarily discontinuing certain medications (e.g., antihistamines) as advised
  • Wearing loose-fitting, comfortable clothing
  • Staying hydrated and eating a light meal beforehand

After the Test: What to Expect

Once results are available, your provider will review and explain:

  • Which allergens triggered a reaction
  • The severity and pattern of your response
  • How these findings relate to your symptoms and lifestyle

Based on this information, we will recommend a care plan tailored to your unique allergy profile, health goals, and clinical needs.

Treatment Options May Include:

  • Medications:
    • Antihistamines, decongestants, or nasal corticosteroid sprays for temporary symptom relief
  • Immunotherapy (allergy shots or drops):

    • Allergy shots are FDA-approved for certain allergens like pollen, dust mites, and insect venom.
    • Sublingual immunotherapy (allergy drops) is FDA-approved for select allergens such as grass, ragweed, and dust mites.
    • For other allergens, use of allergy drops is considered off-label.

⚠️ Off-label use has not been reviewed or approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness. Discuss all risks, benefits, and alternatives with your provider before beginning treatment.

  • Lifestyle and Environmental Modifications:
    • Strategies to reduce allergen exposure at home, school, or work
