BALLOON SINUPLASTY IN ST. LOUIS, MO

What Is Balloon Sinuplasty?

Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive technique that uses a small balloon catheter to gently widen select sinus passages. The goal is to improve airflow and support drainage in certain cases of chronic or recurrent sinus issues. Unlike traditional sinus surgery, this method does not remove tissue. Instead, the balloon briefly expands the sinus opening before being removed, reshaping the passageway.

Because this procedure is not suited for every type of sinus condition, your candidacy is determined through a combination of physical examination, symptom history, and imaging. Your provider will walk you through whether balloon sinuplasty may be an option for your specific case.

Wondering if balloon sinuplasty may be right for you?

A Minimally Invasive Option for Certain Chronic Sinus Symptoms

Chronic sinus pressure, recurring congestion, and ongoing drainage issues can affect daily routines in ways that build over time. At our St. Louis practice, we work with individuals experiencing persistent sinus concerns and offer evaluation-based pathways to help manage symptoms. For some patients, balloon sinuplasty may be one of the options to consider. Your provider will determine whether this approach is appropriate after reviewing your diagnosis, imaging, and overall health history.

Who May Be a Candidate

Balloon sinuplasty may be appropriate for certain patients, including those who:

  • Experience chronic or recurrent sinus symptoms
  • Have not seen improvement with medication or conservative therapies
  • Have sinus anatomy that may benefit from this approach
  • Do not require full endoscopic sinus surgery

Qualification depends heavily on your diagnosis and the underlying cause of your symptoms. Your ENT provider will evaluate whether this method aligns with your medical needs.

What to Expect During the Procedure

In many cases, balloon sinuplasty can be performed in an office setting using local anesthesia. A small catheter is placed into the affected sinus opening, and the balloon is momentarily inflated to expand the passage.

Patients often describe a sensation of pressure, though individual experiences vary.

Some individuals may return to daily activities shortly after the procedure, although recovery time varies based on health status, anatomy, and response to treatment. Your provider will offer guidance tailored to your situation and outline what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

Potential Benefits and Limitations

In some cases, balloon sinuplasty may help manage symptoms such as ongoing congestion, difficulty with sinus drainage, and facial pressure — depending on the individual’s anatomy and condition. Outcomes differ widely from patient to patient, and the procedure may not be effective for all types of sinus concerns.

Your ENT provider will discuss possible benefits as well as limitations based on your evaluation, imaging results, and history of prior treatments.

How Balloon Sinus Dilation Works

Step 1.

Local and topical anesthesia are applied to numb the inside of the nose and sinus area, helping to minimize discomfort during the procedure.

Step 2.

A small, flexible catheter is gently inserted into the nasal passage and guided into the opening (ostium) of the affected sinus.

Step 3.

A tiny balloon at the tip of the catheter is slowly inflated for several seconds. This helps to gently restructure the sinus opening, making more space for normal drainage and airflow. In some cases, the opening can be expanded significantly, depending on the patient’s anatomy.

Step 4.

The balloon and catheter are carefully removed, and the sinus passage remains open to support natural healing.

Results may vary. While many patients experience symptom relief, individual outcomes depend on several factors including sinus anatomy, severity of disease, and overall health. Always consult with your ENT specialist to understand the risks and benefits of this procedure.
